“Everyone should study abroad at least once”: Kennedy’s Experience in Florence

Kennedy Nemechek | Summer 2025

“Global Engagement is important because it broadens our perspectives, fosters understanding across cultures, and prepares us to work and live effectively in an interconnected world. It challenges us to step outside our comfort zones, embrace diversity, and collaborate with people from different backgrounds, ultimately making us more compassionate, adaptable, and informed global citizens.. – Kennedy Nemechek

I spent an unforgettable month studying abroad in Florence, Italy, this summer 2025, with my best friend Perrin and a group of students from my program. I’ve always loved to travel, and I knew I wanted to experience new cultures, meet people from all over the world, and step far outside my comfort zone. The program was everything I hoped for and so much more. I took a Wine Business and Marketing class that fulfilled my International Business collateral and it turned out to be the most fun and interesting course I’ve ever taken. We learned how wine is produced, the different varietals, and how to market it in a global industry. We even got to visit two wineries, including one in the beautiful Tuscan countryside.

On weekends, I explored Switzerland, Nice, Paris, Venice, Tuscany, and Cinque Terre, soaking up the incredible variety of cultures, languages, and landscapes. Every single day felt like an adventure, whether I was sipping espresso in a little café, wandering through famous museums, or watching the sunset over the Arno River. I met so many wonderful people—some of whom have become my closest friends—and made memories I will cherish for the rest of my life. Florence completely stole my heart with its breathtaking art, history, food, and vibrant culture. Without a doubt, this was the best thing I have ever done in my life. It brought me so much joy, confidence, and a deeper curiosity about the world. I honestly wish I could have stayed another month—or forever—because it was truly that incredible. I genuinely believe everyone should study abroad at least once, even if it feels scary at first, because it will be the most rewarding and unforgettable experience you could ever have.

What does the Volunteer Experience mean to you and how has your experience abroad contributed to it?

The Volunteer experience means living with a focus on the needs of others while balancing individual growth with community service. “Vol is a Verb” inspires us as Volunteers to have the courage to care, to act, and to serve. For me, being a Volunteer means acting with care and kindness, stepping up with empathy and leadership, and using my voice to make a positive impact. It’s about being willing to go out of my way to help others while creating an identity for myself through service and connection with the community.

My study abroad experience in Florence, Italy, greatly contributed to this understanding. Immersing myself in a new culture challenged me to step outside my comfort zone, develop cultural awareness, and embrace empathy for others’ perspectives. It allowed me to discover more of who I am and develop crucial life skills like adaptability and openness. These lessons strengthened my ability to serve others with genuine care and confidence—qualities that are central to the Volunteer spirit. Studying abroad reinforced my commitment to live out the Volunteer values by actively caring, acting with courage, and serving both my local community and the wider world.

What skills or experiences have you had in your time abroad to prepare you for life beyond UT?

During my time abroad in Florence, Italy, I developed a variety of skills and gained experiences that have prepared me well for life beyond the University of Tennessee. Immersing myself in a new culture challenged me to become more adaptable and open-minded, skills that are essential in today’s global society. Navigating daily life in a foreign country—managing language barriers, unfamiliar customs, and travel logistics—strengthened my problem-solving abilities and independence.

Academically, my Wine Business and Marketing class taught me practical knowledge about an international industry, while hands-on experiences like winery tours improved my understanding of marketing strategies and business operations. Socially, meeting and building relationships with people from diverse backgrounds enhanced my communication skills and cultural awareness.

Overall, this experience gave me greater confidence, resilience, and a global perspective—qualities that will help me thrive personally and professionally beyond UT.
