Budget Planning

All exchange students will have their tuition and fees waived as a part of their program. However, there are certain expenses that exchange students are responsible for including:

  • Housing
  • Meals
  • Health Insurance Coverage
    • Coverage is mandatory for all international students studying at UT. More information, options for a waiver, and specific insurance costs can be found online on the Student Health Center website.
  • Books and supplies
  • Course fees
    • Occasionally, specific courses may have additional fees for supplies. Details can be found for each course in the UTK Timetable.
  • Personal Expenses
  • Immunizations

*NOTE: Housing and meal plan costs are typically updated for the academic year in the summer (June-August). If these costs have not yet been updated for your term of study, we recommend anticipating a 10% price increase to accurately estimate your cost of attendance.

These costs are estimates and are subject to change at the discretion of the responsible UT departments.

Student Visa – Financial Information

In order to issue a student visa for your exchange program, you must provide proof of sufficient funds for you program via official bank statements and/or scholarship letters within your VolsAbroad application.

You must show funds equivalent to the Cost of Attendance published by UT’s OneStop. Typically, this cost can be estimated by taking the listed total, subtracting the cost of tuition and fees, and dividing that number by two (for a semester-long program).
