All students participating in UT-approved study abroad programs must have international insurance. The policy varies by program type, as noted below:
- UT Faculty-Directed Programs
Students pay for the University of Tennessee’s international insurance coverage as part of their program fees. Students will be enrolled by a PAO staff member and receive information about their coverage via email prior to departure. - UT Credit-Bearing Internship, Service–Learning, and Research Programs Students pay for UT’s international insurance coverage as part of their program fees. Students will be enrolled by a PAO staff member and receive information about their coverage via email prior to departure.
- UT Affiliate Programs
Students receive insurance coverage through their hosting organization and through the University of Tennessee’s international insurance policy. Students will be enrolled by a PAO staff member and receive information about their coverage via email prior to departure. Students will be billed separately for their insurance charge. - UT Exchange and Direct Programs
Students will be enrolled in UT’s international insurance coverage by a PAO staff member and receive information about their coverage via email prior to departure. These students will be billed separately for their insurance charge. - Petition Programs
Students who successfully petition a non-approved CGE education abroad program will be enrolled in UT’s international insurance coverage by a PAO staff member and receive information about their coverage via email prior to departure. These students will be billed separately for their insurance charge.

All UT students on university-approved programs are automatically covered by a blanket international travel insurance policy underwritten by Chubb Insurance with 24/7 travel assistance services provided by International SOS.
Who is International SOS?
International SOS will give expert advice to students to take care of any medical or security that will be needed while students are abroad. Students simply carry the International SOS Membership card and download the International SOS Assistance App to use this complimentary service. Both contain the membership number and key phone numbers along with the website address (www.internationalsos.com).
