CGE Storyteller: Baylee Brown | Traveling While Studying Abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark

Baylee Brown | Fall 2024

Hej! I am so excited to share my recent adventures with everyone. I have just returned from a big trip with friends that I have made with other students, here in Copenhagen. We began planning this trip a few weeks after we all first met at the airport before leaving for Copenhagen in August.

We flew last Saturday from Copenhagen to Milan, Italy. We then rented a car to drive to our lovely little mountain cabin in Segonzano, which is a very small town located near the Dolomites mountain range in northern Italy. The car ended up being an amazing choice since we were in such a small town deep in the mountains. We spent a few days just finding hikes and little cafes all over northern Italy by driving around and doing some Google searches. We made a new friend at one of the cafes that we went to, he was basically the only person we had found that spoke english and exchanged recommendations where we should visit in Segonzano and were even asked all about America and where the Italians should visit, which was so funny as we were looking at the gorgeous Italian alps.

After we spent a few days hiking and living off the grid with the locals, we headed back to the airport for our second location for the week: Corfu, Greece.

We landed in Corfu very late and had to figure out a way to our accommodations. It was a little scary but we found a driver who was willing to take us down to the other end of the island, and we were so grateful. Using a car company that was associated with the airport was probably the safest decision and our driver was so nice, even in the middle of the night. I would definitely recommend the driver service at the Corfu airport.

Waking up in sunny Greece was so nice and so different to the normal cold Denmark and snowy alps in Italy. We got to go to the beach and waterfront restaurants and got to continue to talk to the locals who were so nice and gracious. One store that we went to had a brand new kitten just walking around and they let us hold it and play with it. We learned that Greek restaurants typically give out plates of watermelon and other fruit if guests are kind to the wait staff which was so cool. I had so much fun on this trip and learned so much about different cultures, my new friends, and even myself. Even though I had so much fun, I was so ready to go home. Although home has a different definition and I would love to return to my hometown in Greenville, South Carolina, I am so glad I enjoy my study abroad in Copenhagen enough to call it a “home”.
