Major Guide: Public Administration

Guidelines

Major Coursework

As Public Administration majors, students should adhere to the following criteria in major course selection for study abroad:

  • 12 out of 12 credit hours of Public Administration electives can be taken abroad (300-400 level coursework either in the fields of Economics or Political Science)
  • The following Public Administration courses should be taken at UT and NOT while abroad:
    • ECON 311: Intermediate Economic
    • ECON 471: Public Finance
    • POLS 441: Public Budgeting
    • ECON 472: Public Finance: Taxation and FIscal Federalism
  • Lower division pre-business core courses (including ECON 211 and 213 should NOT be taken while abroad).

Students should meet with an International Programs and Study Abroad (IPSA) advisor to receive final approval for Public Admin coursework.

Non-major Coursework

Although Public Administration majors are encouraged to take their major elective coursework while abroad, there are many other ways to take business coursework and fulfill other degree requirements abroad. Other types of courses available for study abroad include:

  • General education (ethics, arts & humanities, non-business electives)
  • Pre-business core (MGT 202, ECON 211 & 213, STAT 201 equivalents)
  • Business core (FINC 301, BULW 301 & 332 equivalents)
  • Foreign language (HCB requires completion through intermediate level)
  • Collateral / concentration

Course Options

The following are examples of possible major elective courses available.

*This is not an exhaustive list.

  • Italy and the European Union
  • International Law
  • Money and Monetary Policy
  • Political Economy
  • Environmental Economics

Timing

Students interested in pursuing Public Administration elective coursework while abroad should consider:

  • Students are only able to take Public Administration elective coursework after completion of their tracking courses, which is typically after Sophomore year.
  • Public Administration majors are able to go abroad after their first semester of Freshman year if they are only taking general elective courses or Pre-Business core courses.
  • Students should not study abroad their final semester at UT if they plan to graduate in May due to the delay in transcript processing.
